Canoe Slalom is a thrilling and highly physical sport where athletes navigate turbulent whitewater courses in a canoe or kayak. Faced with challenging rapids, paddlers employ precise strokes, core strength and fearless power to complete the course as fast as possible while passing through a series of gates. Athletes kneel and use a single-blade paddle in a canoe while they sit and maneuver with a double-bladed paddle in a kayak. Canoe Slalom features single Canoe and Kayak events along with Kayak Cross, a full-contact, high-speed spectacle where four competitors launch off a ramp, race to the finish and must complete a compulsory 360-degree roll along the way. Canoe Slalom is all speedy, breathtaking action, wowing spectators from splash to finish.
Canoe Slalom made its Olympic Games debut in 1972, paused its appearances and then returned permanently in 1992.
