Artistic Swimming (formerly Synchronized Swimming) made a splash with its Olympic Games debut at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, and now it returns to the city where it all began. This mesmerizing sport sees swimmers perform choreographed routines to music in sync with their performance partners. From power lifts to graceful underwater moves, each performance demands perfect timing, strength and breath control, all while never touching the bottom of the pool or being out of the water for more than 10 seconds. Swimmers perform in team and duet configurations, and in free, technical and acrobatic routines, and are judged on synchronization, execution, difficulty and artistic expression.
